Matt Harris' Fly Fishing Year - April

Home: Salmon on the Tyne

April will see me jumping on the train to hook up with my great mates Andy Blyth and Gary Hillary to target some of the big, deep-bodied salmon that will be holding in the lovely pools at Bywell, on the rolling River Tyne. The Tyne is one of Atlantic Salmon fishing’s few great success stories of recent years. Despite the fact that pollution came close to destroying this magnificent river, Peter Gray’s visionary hatchery program has saved the river’s salmon run, and the Tyne is now the “talk of the Toon”, and one of the very best salmon fisheries in Britain.

Away: GTs in the Seychelles

The big April tides are my favourite time to head for the remarkable, cutting edge fishery at Cosmoledo, Providence, Farquar, Alphonse and Astove, in the far-western Seychelles. Pioneered by my great friends Keith Rose-Innes, Gerhard Laubscher and Arno Mattee, these atolls are home to some of the biggest, nastiest fish that you can hope to tussle with on fly.

Forget the millions of bonefish, triggerfish and even milkfish vying for your attention: GT’s are the thing. Caranx ignoblis are the undisputed kings of the Indian Ocean, and they will do some horrible things to all that valuable tackle. However, get it right and you will get to see one of fly fishing’s most formidable adversaries up close and personal. Be warned, wading the flats for GTs is not for the faint-hearted – but it is one of the most exciting things you can do with a fly rod.

Matt Harris' Fly Fishing Year - April

The Seychelles is famous for its remote atolls and beautiful beaches but within the flyfishing community it is famous for the best saltwater flyfishing in the world. There simple is no other destination on the planet that offers the same level of saltwater flyfishing. There are over 60 species of fish that can be caught on the fly. That said what draws guests to these stunning islands and atolls most are the numerous bonefish, the immensely strong Giant trevally, the acrobatic awesome milkfish, the pernickety Indo-Pacific permit and reef-crunching triggerfish. If you would like to book your saltwater trip of a lifetime we are here to guide you.
