Matt Harris' Fly Fishing Year - March
Home: Brown trout on the River Usk
The curtain-raiser for the British river trout season is the March Brown hatch on the Usk. Catch it right and you can enjoy fantastic dry fly sport on the very first day of the season. Stay at Tiggy Pettifer’s lovely bed and breakfast at Tyr Chanter and fish on her beautiful private beat on the river.
Away: Seat trout and rainbows in Argentina
March signals the start of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Crisp frosts, a lower sun and earlier sunsets make it my favourite time to fish the world’s greatest sea trout river, the Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego.
Fresh fish are still coming into the river on the last day of the season, and you can ambush them at Villa Maria lodge on the lower river, or Kau Tapen further upstream. Both lodges are a home from home, where the fishing, guiding, hospitality and accommodation are second to none.
And if you're going to go all that way, why not combine your trip with a visit to Luciano Alba’s fantastic wild rainbow trout fishery at Estancia Laguna Verde, a short truck-ride from the remarkable Lago Strobel. The fish here average a stupendous 10lb+ and range to way over 20lb. Crucially, you can sight-fish for them in the clear waters of this unique trout fishery.
Travel the world with Frontiers...
Fishing in Argentina is stuff of legends, not many countries can offer the same variety in terms of fishing and landscape. From the monster, wild rainbow trout in Jurassic Lake and the stunning blue-ribbon trout rivers of Patagonia to the hard fighting sea trout of Tierra del Fuego or the golden dorado further north, Frontiers has been there and done it and we have been organising trips for over 30 years. If you are interested in bagging a hard fighting Golden dorado or hooking into a 30 lbs trout then get in touch and we can help you get one step closer to a fish of a life time.
