Matt Harris' Fly Fishing Year - May
Home: Trophy sea trout on the Towy
May is the key month if you want to target a big sea trout in the UK. When it comes to real beasts – fish of 10lb and more – nowhere in Britain can rival the Abercothi and Golden Grove Beats on Wales' fabled River Towy. Casting into the bible-black night and waiting for that savage, nerve-shredding take is as exhilarating as any fly fishing experience available in the UK. Cyril Fox and Jamie Harries, the resident guides, are both hugely likeable and extremely experienced, and they will do everything they can to help you catch one of the Towy’s magnificent double-figure sea trout.
Away: Jardinas de la Reina
Cuba’s Jardinas de la Reina (JDR) still offers one of the very best saltwater fly fishing experiences available anywhere on the planet. The sparkling, turquoise waters of this vast marine park are teeming with bonefish, jacks, barracuda, snook, snapper, permit… and tarpon. Lots of tarpon. While there are places that offer bigger fish, the tarpon of the JDR flats can offer almost relentless action on wide, shallow flats that are gin clear and pristine. If you want to mix things up, go and try to catch a permit, the very biggest challenge in the fly fishing world.
