Review: The Blaser Hybrid 2-in-1 jacket

Review: The Blaser Hybrid 2-in-1 jacket

As a highly regarded sporting arms company with its roots firmly embedded in the hunting field, Blaser is perhaps best-known for its hunting rifles. But they’re now doing some exciting things on the clothing front, too. Charlie Brownlow tests their Hybrid 2-in-1 jacket.

This is the first review I have written about a shooting product, and although I am in the field a lot, I am a creature of habit and tend to stick to what I know when purchasing new clothes or kit. So it was with some scepticism I picked up Blaser’s Hybrid 2-in-1 jacket.

In this review I will not bore you with technical language (apologies in advance to all the kit-geeks out there!) that I have pinched from the Blaser website; rather I will just give my honest opinion on a jacket I have been wearing on a daily basis for the last month in an array of sporting scenarios and weather conditions.

The Hybrid jacket comes as two parts – the outer jacket and the inner shell. The outer layer is waterproof with a detachable hood which is removed on all of my jackets as soon as I get them home. The jacket has three pockets on its front and one under the zip flap (the latter is ideal for keeping your keys in). There is also a useful ‘poacher’s’ pocket in the outside back which is the perfect place to store the inner jacket when it is not in use.

Review: The Blaser Hybrid 2-in-1 jacket

Whilst wearing the Hybrid, I remained completely dry – it is fully waterproof and windproof. On several occasions whilst out on a shoot day wearing the jacket, we have experienced strong, cold, and cutting winds, but I have remained warm. I must also mention the adjustable cuffs which can be properly tightened – so often a source of drafts in other jackets.

I like the colour and cut of the jacket and it is extremely comfortable to wear. When you are not a super model the look is not so important but there’s no doubt it is an aesthetically pleasing jacket.

The inner shell is a Primaloft padded garment which zips into the outer shell covering for an added level of warmth. The two detach and reattach in a matter of seconds using poppers and zips – it’s very user friendly. Indeed, the inner jacket has side pockets and can be worn on its own in warmer weather.

As the full jacket or split into its two constituent parts, the Hybrid is very light and even with both layers does not impede movement when mounting a gun or climbing fences and fallen trees.

Review: The Blaser Hybrid 2-in-1 jacket

The only issue I had with the jacket was shortlived; at first I struggled slightly with cartridge extraction from the side pockets of the jacket. However, once I had grown used to the pockets, this no longer bothered me.I am looking forward to using the inner jacket for spring and summer fishing as it is the perfect cut and weight for fishing at those times. I regret not being able to tell you how it fared on the hill stalking hinds as I suspect this is where it will come into its own. It is the perfect weight and with the detachable inner layer, I imagine it would be ideal for a long, cold wait on an exposed hill-face.

This jacket will get a lot more use from me on both the riverbank and in the shooting field, but my suspicion is that it will truly be at home on the hill, stalking red deer.
